Lockheed Martin progresses on NASA space vehicle

Lockheed Martin has accepted responsibility for the Operations & Checkout Building at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Kennedy Space Center. Lockheed Martin will use the facility to process the Orion exploration vehicle. The vehicle is a key element of NASA’s Constellation Program that will succeed the Space Shuttle as primary vehicle for human space exploration by 2014. Final assembly, checkout and acceptance testing of Orion for both the Crew Module and Service Module will be performed in the building. Modifications to prepare the building for the program will be performed by Lockheed.

Zentox Photox reduces air contaminants in tests

Zentox’s Photox air purification system showed ability to reduce airborne contaminants in tests performed by EMSL Analytical. The tests were performed to determine the effectiveness of purifier in the reduction of formaldehyde concentration, ammonia concentration, viable black mold spores and Bacillus in indoor air. The system is designed to remove noxious odors, toxic vapors and infectious organisms from the indoor environment. It does not emit any harmful products or ozone. Destruction of contaminants occurs completely inside the unit.

Harris completes merger with Stratex

The Microwave Communications Division of Harris has merged with Stratex Networks to create Harris Stratex Networks. The new company, with calendar year 2006 revenue of about $650 million, is the largest independent provider of wireless transmission network solutions, with customers in over 150 countries. Harris Stratex Networks was listed on the NASDAQ Global Market in January.

“Combining these two businesses creates much greater scale, complementary global distribution channels, and an unmatched end-to-end product portfolio,” said Howard L. Lance, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Harris Corporation. “The integration of the combined technology, leadership, and market knowledge of the two businesses creates a powerful new company capable of delivering a unique value proposition to a growing base of customers worldwide.”

Harris is the majority shareholder of the new company, with about 56 percent ownership. The combination resulted in a gain to Harris, during the third quarter of fiscal year 2007, of approximately $131 million or $.92 per diluted share.

Boeing completes future combat systems experiment

Boeing and Science Applications International have successfully completed an eight-month experiment for the for the U.S. Army’s Future Combat Systems that included soldier testing of prototypes. The experiment was a three-phase effort that combines laboratory, field and demonstration activities.

“Experimentation is critical to FCS program success and most importantly will help enable the early spin out of key capabilities to the current force in 2008,” said Dennis Muilenburg, vice president and general manager of Boeing Combat Systems and FCS program manager. “The successful completion of Experiment 1.1 further validates the progress and maturity of selected FCS technologies and demonstrated interoperability between FCS and current force systems.”

The final demonstration phase of Experiment 1.1, which was conducted January to February, included 36 soldier participants who provided "hands-on" feedback of prototypes.

The DQ red ellipse logo is changing

The red ellipse with the DQ used as the Dairy Queen logo is getting a new look. The new logo will be introduced to more than 5,600 locations worldwide. The DQ lettering also has been updated to a more current type style. This is the first time in company history that a new logo will be brand-centric for all of the concepts, including DQ Orange Julius.

Use of the new logo for point of purchase and other collateral materials, television advertising and packaging is slated for a complete rollout by the end of 2007. Over the next couple of years, the new logo will be made available as an optional choice to franchisees in need of new store signage and for those who want to update existing signage.

Harris completes first phase of Net-centric Test Bed

Harris has successfully developed the first phase of its Net-centric Test Bed and has used it to test and demonstrate components of the Advanced Extremely High Frequency Navy Multiband Terminal. The terminal is a $1 billion-plus U.S. Navy program that the company is pursuing. Located in Palm Bay, the Harris test bed is a 25,000 square foot, multi-million dollar facility used to demonstrate integrated, network-centric communications and information systems solutions that support the critical missions of military, intelligence and other government customers.

The completed first phase of the facility incorporates the newest military satellite communications equipment and demonstrates integrated wideband/protected satellite frequencies from 4 GHz through 44 GHz. Phase II of the facility now underway, will demonstrate advanced line-of-sight/beyond line-of-sight communications equipment and technologies for data links, high-capacity backbone networks, edge networks and sensor networks that cover the HF to 14 GHz frequency bands. Phase III will incorporate security and enterprise/networking technologies that create integrated systems solutions for Harris customers.

GE unit makes European water investment

GE Energy Financial Services is entering the European water market and expanding into industrial water treatment by buying a majority of the assets of Idex AQUASERVICES in France. GE is acquiring a 95 percent stake, including debt obligations. The company is a developer, owner and operator of facilities that purify water for the food, beverage and cosmetics industries. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. The investment is the first for GE Energy Financial Services’ water team outside the United States and its first in the burgeoning market for industrial water treatment, comprising an estimated one-third of all water assets worldwide.

Northrop Grumman to test Kinetic Energy Interceptor booster

The Kinetic Energy Interceptor program, under development by prime contractor Northrop Grumman, is on schedule to meet the Missile Defense Agency’s objective of a 2008 booster flight. The program successfully achieved all key proof-of-concept milestones in 2006 and is readying the system for a first flight test of this fast, new booster in 2008. The interceptor will be a mobile missile-defense system with the unique capability to destroy a hostile missile during its boost, ascent or midcourse phase of flight.

Northrop Grumman successfully develops new GPS system

A newly certified Global Positioning System range tracking system, developed for the Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile by Northrop Grumman, was recently flown at Vandenberg Air Force Base for the first time. The GPS Metric Tracking System replaces the C-band transponders previously used to track the Minuteman III test launches from Vandenberg Air Force Base.
