FARO
presents new laser scanner kit
FARO Technologies has developed a Super Mobile Laser Scanner Kit.
“Nearly every application requires a laser scanner to be repositioned in order
to get a comprehensive view,” FARO president and CEO Jay Freeland said. “The
new Super Mobile Kit makes scanning faster and more productive by enabling
our customers to take it anywhere – whether they’re hiking through forests
or rough terrain like in civil engineering, tunnels and mines, forensic scenes
or archaeological excavations.”
The FARO Laser Scanner LS is a portable, computerized measurement device that
scans, digitally recreates and records all of an object or area’s dimensions,
creating what looks like a “photograph” on the computer screen – but in 3-D.
The captured data can be used to create a digital model for inspection, reverse-engineering,
CAD-to-part comparison, factory planning, or investigations for industries
ranging from power, process and piping to forensics, surveying and historical
preservation.

District introduces new online community forum
Brevard Public Schools has introduced a new online
“Community Forum” feature on the Brevard Public Schools web site.
In addition to the section in which the school district seeks input
on specific topics, there is also a public section that enables general
discussions to be posted, and ideas for improvement to be submitted.
The district will also seek input on ways to improve their web site
to ensure our goals of providing timely and effective information
and communications are met. The forum will be moderated and screened
for appropriateness at all times and can be accessed from the district’s
home page.

Social networking offers U.S. vets a way to connect
New social networking website for United States veterans USVetSpace.com launches
Vet Connect, a new online live chat feature for use by all veterans, their
families, and veteran organizations and charities. USVetSpace.com, recently
created and styled after popular social networking sites such as MySpace and
Facebook by Veterans’ National Radio, provides a virtual space online for US
Veterans to send messages and befriend each other, create personal homepages,
share photos in digital photo galleries, interact in forums and online clubs,
and read current news articles on veterans’ interests. With the addition of
Vet Connect live chat, the founders of USVetSpace.com hope to further strengthen
unity among the veterans’ groups in America by providing new ways for veterans,
their families and organizations to communicate with each other and stay in
touch. All facilities on the site are available to members for free. Members
may choose to upgrade to paid membership status to support the site’s efforts.

DoD selects Northrop Grumman for records maintenance
The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded Northrop
Grumman a contract to provide technical and training support for
software maintenance that will simplify records management and provide
added security for more than 8,000 users at 63 sites worldwide.
As part of the contract, Northrop Grumman’s Information Technology sector will
provide its e.POWER software and Electronic Document Workflow application to
help the Defense Contract Management Agency manage department contracts.
“Northrop Grumman’s e.POWER software will provide a high level of efficiency
in the management of contract folders,” said Linda Mills, president of Northrop
Grumman IT’s Civilian Agencies group. “e.POWER will also enhance the accuracy
and quality of the agency’s software applications, reduce operating costs and
eliminate administrative delays.”

Intersil regulator reduces noise requirements
Intersil has introduced a 2.5A, wide input voltage synchronous buck regulator
that greatly reduces noise and EMI filter requirements through programmable
switching frequency and external synchronization. The integrated
switching MOSFETs and a thermally enhanced compact 4mm x 4mm QFN
package make the ISL8502 an ideal fit for 5V/12Vin space-critical
applications.
The regulator features external synchronization capability with master/ slave
configuration to enable the user to synchronize up to four ICs out of phase
and significantly reduce electromagnetic interference in the design while also
providing multiple outputs from the same input rail. The device’s adjustable
switching frequency range of 500kHz to 1.2MHz ensures high efficiency and a
smaller number of external BOM components. The external compensation provides
additional flexibility and enables various choices of passive devices.

Security agency certifies Harris network product
Harris’s new SecNet 54 Secure Wireless Local Area
Network product has received Type 1 certification from the National
Security Agency’s Commercial COMSEC Evaluation Program. The product
is crypto- modernization compliant and can be used in secure communications
applications that require up to Top Secret/SCI Level Data. It supports
the High Assurance Internet Protocol Interoperability Specification
for High Assurance Internet Protocol Encryptors.
“This product has been anxiously awaited by the marketplace due to its modularity,
versatility, small size, and up to Top Secret wireless and wired communications
capabilities at high data rates,” said Dan Pearson, president of the Department
of Defense Programs business unit of Harris Corporation’s Government Communications
Systems Division.
Harris previously announced that it had been awarded a potential $41 million
Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity contract by the NSA to supply SecNet
54 Secure Wireless Local Area Network products and Key Fill Cables to approved
customers.

Harris introduces advanced Ethernet transport features
Harris Stratex Networks has announced the availability of two major enhancements
to its gigabit Ethernet transport features for the Eclipse wireless transmission
platform. Physical Port Link Aggregation provides very-high-speed virtual Ethernet
circuits, designed to provide higher throughput and greater path resiliency,
a breakthrough for many operators planning to deploy new, bandwidth-hungry
services. The second innovation, Resilient Wireless Packet Ring protocol, provides
redundancy in Ethernet mesh and ring topologies, using Rapid Failure Detection
to significantly reduce convergence times to 50 milliseconds or less.
These two new features support resilient, high-speed wireless Ethernet while
providing recovery convergence times that dramatically exceed standard Ethernet
protection mechanisms.
