IEEE Melbourne nets award

Mary A. Flavin, representing the IEEE Melbourne Section, recently accepted the IEEE Region 3 Exemplary Section. The award was given in recognition of outstanding section leadership, management and administration for 2006. The section supported the Brevard County science fairs by providing judges and awarding prizes for the best projects in electrical engineering and computer engineering.

Boeing Florida VP retires

Former NASA astronaut and space shuttle flight engineer Bruce Melnick, vice president of Boeing Florida Operations, retired from company April 1. Melnick led the company’s Florida team for more than 10 years in providing engineering, facilities and maintenance support to NASA and the U.S. Department of Defense for the space shuttle, International Space Station and Delta rocket programs.

“Bruce Melnick has done a tremendous job in leading Boeing’s Florida Space Coast efforts,” said Brewster Shaw, vice president and general manager, Boeing Space Exploration. “He has demonstrated strong leadership and an unwavering dedication to Space Exploration and a commitment to successful program execution.”

Boeing Space Exploration Vice President and Constellation Program Manager John Elbon has been named the acting Florida site senior executive and will continue to lead the company’s pursuit of NASA’s Constellation program elements from Houston, Texas.

America’s space pioneers gather at KSC

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex will host more than twenty legend astronauts June 8 and 9. The Sims and Hakow UACC Astronaut Autograph Show, which travels to a different city every year, will offer attendees astronaut autograph sessions, photo opportunities, lectures and a banquet and silent auction. NASA center recognized for excellence

NASA’s Shared Services Center was named runner-up for the Best New Shared Services Organization Excellence Award, which recognizes the most successful shared services organization launched within the last three years. The award is nationally recognized as the highest accolade for shared services organizations. A panel of shared services experts and leaders evaluated nominations based on organizational design, start-up strategy, procedures, implementation, change management and communication strategies. The NASA’s Shared Services Center was launched March 2006. It is located on the grounds of the Stennis Space Center.

Florida Tech names life member of engineering institute

Florida Tech’s head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Professor Robert L. Sullivan, has been named a Life Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The distinguished status is reserved for those with a long association with the institute. Sullivan has been a member since 1967. He is the author of several books on electrical engineering and has published numerous professional papers on power systems and other electrical engineering topics.

Harris teams with Habitat for Humanity of Brevard County

Harris is teaming with Habitat for Humanity of Brevard County to help a local family become homeowners. Members of the Harris leadership team recently raised a wall on a Habitat for Humanity house in Melbourne’s Booker T. Washington neighborhood. As a full-house sponsor, Harris employees will volunteer more than 200 hours to build the home for the family. Construction is slated to be completed in mid-June.

Enrollment open for LEAD Brevard programs

Enrollment applications are now available for LEAD Brevard’s 2007-2008 leadership development programs, including Leadership Brevard and Brevard Insight for adults, and Youth Leadership Brevard for high school students.

Leadership Brevard, entering its 21st year, is the organization’s flagship program. More than 800 graduates, representing the private, public and non-profit sectors have engaged in the hands-on sessions of instruction and dialogue about key county & regional issues, leadership development skills, and opportunities for increased civic involvement.

In addition, participants work in teams to create solutions to identified community problems. Five or more community action projects are developed each year, many of which continue to impact the Space Coast community in positive ways. The 2007-2008 session will begin in September and conclude with a graduation ceremony in May.

Enrollment is open to adults living and working in Brevard County on a first-come, first-served basis. Youth Leadership Brevard participants, who must meet certain criteria in the areas of academic standards, extra-curricular activities and community service are selected by committee.
